If you are having consistent problems making your mortgage payments as well as keeping up with your other debt, you may want to consult with a non-profit credit counseling agency. They may be able to assist you with getting your debt organized, budgeting and other financial matters that can help you get control of your debt and start working to pay it off.
For a list of counselors in you area go to www.debtadvice.org., the website of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or call them at 1-800-388-2227. They have a wealth of information on credit counseling, bankruptcy counseling and other financial information that may be of help to you.
Beware of companies that contact you and want you to pay them to counsel you them or help you clear your credit! Most are scams! All the information you need is available for free from the non-profit counseling services. The federal government grants millions of dollars to these agencies to help people in financial distress!
Credit counseling is usually a first step if you need to find an alternative to foreclosure on your home. Most of the government sponsered Making Homes Affordable program (see HARP, HAMP and HAFA) require you start by talking to a credit counselor. |
